Get a Hobby

Being a parent for nearly two decades now, I know a bit about self-sacrifice, as do most parents. You work hard to pay the bills and provide for your children, but how often do you take care of yourself? There is only so much time in the day to do your job, maintain the house, clean the clothes, make the meals, help the kids with school work and take them back and forth to their after-school activities. That leaves little to no time for parents to indulge in their own recreational activities.

It’s rather unfortunate that for all parents give, they leave very little for themselves. Has there ever been a sport you wanted to take part in? Or perhaps dance lessons you’d like to take? How about a new hobby, like wood working or jewelry making? Personally, I think everyone should have an outlet; something that they can pour their heart into and get great personal satisfaction in accomplishing. I have always wanted to try archery, but the financial and time constraints of having a family have placed this desire squarely on the back burner.

Lately, though, I have come to the realization that everyone needs to be able to partake in an extracurricular activity. If time, or the lack thereof, is the sole reason you fail to indulge yourself then perhaps you could include your family. For instance, if playing baseball is your thing, take the family to the batting cages each week. If football is what interests you, involve your whole family (brother, sisters, aunts, uncles, moms, dads and the kids) in a weekly football pool. Have everyone pitch in to get a gift certificate for the person with the winning record (monetary incentives always keep kids interests).

If financial concerns are what prevents you from treating yourself to some much needed diversions, make a list of what interest you most. Some businesses offer free or low cost classes. For instance, Michael’s Arts and Crafts Stores offer classes on crafting projects or Wilton Cake Decorating classes for a very small fee. They even offer a free kids crafting program. If you’re a handyman (or woman), check with your local Home Depot or Lowes. Often times they offer free workshops to promote new power tools or products. If you just cannot find something that interests you and you need some new ideas do a few broad Google searches on hobbies or recreation. If you’re still at a loss, check out our website at www.americandiversions.com. We’re always updating with new ideas and offers to help you on your way.

About the Author

I am a married mother of two boys.  I am very politically minded, but I also like the lighter side of life.  You can catch me playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 with my youngest son or having outer space and theology discussions with my oldest son, or we just tie a toy to a fishing rod and watch the kittens go nuts.  Point being, I love spending time with my kids doing just about anything.  Writing articles on topics that interest me allows me an outlet outside of the family.  I hope you enjoy my article and I appreciate feedback.
